The “2009 Vietnam Rice Festival ”, the first of its kind, will be held in Vi Thanh commune, Hau Giang province from November 26-30, announced the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Hau Giang provincial People’s Committee at a press conference in Hanoi on September 30.

The festival aims to honour the “wet rice civilisation” and to promote production and the application of modern technologies as well as creating a trademark for Vietnamese rice.

The event, named “For the development of Agriculture, Rural areas and Farmers”, will attract rice businesses from across the country.

During the festival, several activities will be held to introduce the traditional art of the Mekong river and the “wet rice civilisation”.

This will be the first important social, economic and cultural event to be held in Hau Giang, Vietnam’s rice basket.

The event will include displays of rice from many provinces and cities and foodstuff produced by local and foreign businesses.

The festival is an important event in the run up to the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi.
